The best way to witness a maritime city is from the water - cruise boats leave from Watermans Dock in the city, heading upriver to Moorilla Vineyard, downriver to Wrest Point Hotel-Casino and beyond to the D'Entecasteaux Channel.

Seafood is a Hobart popular specialty - Hobart chefs delight in using the best of fresh-caught scalefish, crustaceans and shellfish. For a wide view of this scenic city, take a drive to the summit of one of Hobart's mountains. Mt Nelson is a 10 minute drive from the city - the Signal Station on top was one of a chain of semaphore masts that relayed messages between Hobart and Port Arthur. For a much wider panoramic view of the city, river and estuary, it's a half-hour drive through alpine forest to the 1271 metre pinnacle of Mt Wellington - on a clear day the view extends from Ben Lomond in north-east Tasmania to the ranges of the Southwest.

Back in the open air, take a stroll through Hobart's ever oldest residential precinct - from Salamanca Place, climb Kelly Steps and walk up to Hampden Road, with its village atmosphere, coffee shops, galleries and bistros. Find your way to Arthur Circus, where Hobart's oldest Georgian-era cottages peep shyly at each other across a circle of green. The city blends into its fringing bushland - grab a free copy of the Hobart City Council's outstanding walks guide and explore Bicentennial Park on Mt Nelson, Knocklofty Reserve in West Hobart or the network of tracks on Mt Wellington.

Launceston

Located at the head of the beautiful Tamar Valley wine growing region, only few places in the world can match Launceston's natural and historic charm. The city is situated where two rivers meet to become the Tamar on its way to the sea, and is famous for its ancient ravine cut into the hills by the South Esk River. This, Cataract Gorge, has been a major focus for Launceston's leisure time since the city's earliest days and is just a 15 minute walk from the city. You can stroll among the peacocks and rhododendrons in the Gorge Cliff Grounds and cross the river to the summer open-air swimming pool on the world's longest single-span chairlift (or take the suspension bridge). Eateries are situated on both sides of the Gorge and there are also many walking trails to explore. From the Kings Bridge end of the Gorge, you can walk past the boardwalk cafes and wine bars of modern Seaport, to the cultural precinct at Inveresk.

Here you'll find Tasmania's home of AFL, the Aurora Stadium, as well as the impressive Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and the University's Academy of the Arts and award-winning School of Architecture. Greater Launceston has a population of around 100,000. The city has the charm and pace of a regional centre and the facilities of a much larger city, but without the crowding, traffic, litter and crime (we're the safest region in the safest state in Australia). Perhaps this is why the locals are well-known for being relaxed and friendly.
